Judo FAQs

What will I need to participate in a Judo class?

All you really need is a judo gi (uniform) and a belt.  You may purchase both items at the dojo.

What should I expect at my first class?

Learning how to fall is one of the most important aspects of Judo as it is what will keep you safe while practicing.  Once you are adept at that, you'll be learning basic throws and ground techniques.

What is a normal Judo class like?

Our Judo classes are an hour for children and youth’s class and an hour and a half for adults.  After a brief warm-up which includes some cardio, strength and agility and flexibility exercises techniques are taught for ground and stand up fighting.  There is always time for sparring (free practice) and adults have the option to work on own techniques (sometimes with a crash mat).

How long before I can compete?

Generally, competitions are open to belts yellow belt and above.

How long before I can get my Yellow Belt?

All belt transitions are done through your teachers or sensei at the dojo.  They will be watching and will let you know when you are ready to test for a new belt usually, two to three months for adults and 6-12 months for children.

What happens during a grading test?

For yellow and orange belts, you will be asked to show some throws from the Gokyo (40 throws of Judo) and ground techniques which are appropriate for your belt level.   Starting at Green belt, knowing the first set of Nage No Kata (forms of throwing) will also be a requirement of the test.
